#1079 – Thor is Selfish

The more times I watch it, the more I appreciate the first Thor. I know a lot of people don’t like it, but I’m very fond of Kenneth Branagh’s film. I like the personal nature of it, really focusing on Thor’s journey from a selfish jerk into a selfless hero. His one act of selflessness, sacrificing himself for his friends, was a catalyst in his life. That moment set his life on a different course, one of selflessness, generosity and thinking of others first.

Thor had a choice before him, though. He didn’t have to continue on a path of selflessness. Once he got his powers and Mjölnir back, he could have fallen back into his selfish ways. However, that one act of selflessness led to a transformed life.

In this instance, the god of thunder did a much better job than a prophet of God. Continue reading

#1078 – Star Wars: Rogue One

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on April 22, 2015 by scotthiga

Other than the trailer for The Force Awakens, the most exciting news out of Star Wars Celebration centered on Star Wars: Rogue One.

Director Gareth Edwards was there to share an early teaser trailer as well as the first synopsis for the movie. Rogue One will be set just prior to Episode IV and focus on a team of Rebels stealing the plans for the first Death Star.

In a world without Jedi, Edwards had this to day about his film.

God’s not coming to save us. We are on our own. And we are going to have to do this ourselves. We have to turn it around… It comes down to a group of individuals that don’t have special powers.

The spinoffs will be a part of the Star Wars Anthology series, of which Rogue One will be the first. I’m definitely excited about the prospect of seeing Rebel soldiers fighting for their cause against the overwhelming strength of the Empire, as they steal the plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon.

In honor of Rogue One, here are some Bible stories filled with thievery.  Continue reading

#1040 – Viral Bible Stories

The Internet is weird.

Yesterday the Internet blew up with a llama chase in Arizona and a debate over the color of a dress.

There’s no telling what will go viral and what won’t. Who spends time scouring YouTube in order to find something to go viral? Thankfully we have the Internet to tell us what is cool and what we should be watching.

Here are some biblical stories that would have gone the most viral. Continue reading

Jan Wijnants - Parable of the Good Samaritan

Jan Wijnants – Parable of the Good Samaritan

I love the story of the Good Samaritan.

Most of the times I’ve read that story or heard it taught the application is to be more like the Good Samaritan. We are called to reach out to those in need. Jesus wants us to be a true neighbor to everyone in our lives. We should do whatever we can to place the needs of others above our own.

Those are all fine applications. In fact, if that’s all I ever learned from the story of the Good Samaritan then I would be better off for it.

As I was reading through it recently, though, I saw that we could see ourselves in all of the characters in the parable. Continue reading

#907 – Old Batman

Even though Warner Bros. flinched and moved Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s release date, it is still going to be a massive hit. The weekend of March 25, 2016 is going to be dominated by DC’s two most famous characters. I enjoyed Man of Steel and, even though I prefer Marvel to DC, I’ll see Batman v Superman on opening weekend.

Some news hit the Internet yesterday about Bruce Wayne in the upcoming crossover movie. Ben Affleck is no spring chicken and Batman v Superman producer Michael Uslan confirmed that Affleck’s Batman will be a little older. Instead of a young vigilante fresh out of his League of Shadows training, Affleck’s Batman will be in his 40s, an older and more experienced Caped Crusader.

In light of old Batman, here are some of my favorite biblical senior citizens.  Continue reading

#791 – Elements and Animals

We have been going through The Story with our junior high students. The Story is the Bible told in story form, like a novelization of God’s word. This weekend our story came out of Daniel. Our lesson focused on the fiery furnace and Daniel in the lions’ den. Those are two classic Bible stories that get taught over and over again in Sunday school classes.

Those stories really highlight two keys to a great children’s Bible story: elements and animals.

I’m so grateful that I grew up in a Christian home. My strong Christian upbringing is just another example of God’s grace. A big part of that upbringing involved going to Sunday school every week. I loved Sunday school even though it seemed like we always heard the same stories. Looking back now, I realize that most of the best children’s Bible stories involved elements, animals or both.

Here’s a non-exhaustive list. Continue reading

#784 – Demons Listen

Listening to Jesus can be difficult. No matter how he speaks to us, sometimes it’s hard to listen and do what he says.

Maybe he speaks to us through a prompting of the Holy Spirit.

Maybe he speaks to us through a conversation with a friend.

Maybe he speaks to us through his word.

Jesus is always going out of his way to speak to us. But sometimes we go even further out of our way to ignore him.

Which is a little embarrassing because demons are really good at listening to Jesus. Continue reading
