#1085 – Review: Avengers: Age of Ultron

I’ve been looking forward to Avengers: Age of Ultron ever since it was first announced at Comic-Con in the summer of 2013. In the almost two years since then, I have been following the production while trying to limit spoilers. I made it through clean and last night was able to fully enjoy Avengers: Age of Ultron.

I was thoroughly entertained by Age of Ultron. After watching it only once, I can’t really say how it compares to The Avengers or the other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I can say, though, that it is a lot of fun. A lot of the same pieces from The Avengers are there, but they get used in different ways. Also, the new characters like Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Ultron himself definitely add a lot more to the movie.

Here are some other thoughts I had while watching Avengers: Age of Ultron. Continue reading

#1084 – The Weight of Shame

black-widow

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched The Avengers. I saw it three times in the theater and have watched it countless times at home. I still find it terribly entertaining, especially when all six Avengers finally assemble in New York City.

Less exciting, but potentially more intriguing, is the scene between Natasha Romanoff and Loki. Black Widow’s past is shrouded in secrecy but, by her own admission, there are a lot of sins for which she needs to atone. Even though Loki didn’t break Natasha down, she still admitted that there was a lot of red in her ledger.

More than any of the other Avengers, we may be able to best identify with Black Widow. She may be a well-trained assassin, but at least she’s a normal human being. She’s not a god, she’s not a super soldier and she’s not a billionaire, playboy philanthropist. Natasha is just a mere mortal attempting to wrestle with her future, her present and her past.

And perhaps that is where we most identify with her: in her wrestling with the past. Continue reading

#1083 – Guest Review: Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron doesn’t come out for two more days in the United States. However, it came out last week in other parts of the world and my friend Wilko was lucky enough to catch it. Wilko is one of the first people I met through The Christian Nerd. Even though he lives in Namibia, we’ve actually spent time together in real life. Wilko agreed to share some of his thoughts about Age of Ultron, which you can read below.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of watching Avengers: Age of Ultron. It was a great superhero flick with all the key elements to make it enjoyable: fantastic heroes, powerful baddies, great fighting scenes with their fair share of explosions, witty conversation and a decent plot to tie it all together.

In short, it’s a movie that I hope you’ll get to catch on the big screen.

I had a chance to watch it a week early, so Scott asked me to jot down some thoughts about it. (Spoiler free thoughts that don’t exceed any info not found in the trailers, that is.)  Continue reading

I can’t believe it’s already the last week of April. This year is flying by and the summer is upon us. As schools wind down and the temperature heats up, we need to get ready for the summer movie season. This year there are plenty of nerdy options coming to the big screen. Check out previews of the movies you might want to see in May and June.

#1080 – Avengers Anticipation

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on April 24, 2015 by scotthiga

I’m pretty excited for Age of Ultron; just like I was excited for the original Avengers. Here’s a post I wrote about my excitement for The Avengers and how I should probably be just as excited for what God wants to do in my life.

I cannot get over how completely excited I am for The Avengers. Even though the movie comes out on May 4 I already know I won’t be able to see it until May 5. On May 4 I’ll be helping out at our church as we host the Chick-fil-A Leadercast and, that night, we have our annual student ministry overnighter. Knowing that I’ll have to wait an additional 24 hours only makes me more excited.

Below is the most recent commercial for The Avengers. Continue reading

#1058 – Marvel Spoilers

Last week I wrote about J.J. Abrams reportedly in line to direct Episode IX, a movie that won’t come out for at least four years. Faithful reader and commenter Mike shared that any news about Episode IX is premature, especially since The Force Awakens is still almost nine months away.

Apparently Disney isn’t only premature with Star Wars but also with Marvel.

Different rumors/spoilers surfaced this week about some of Marvel’s upcoming movies. I could understand spoilers about Age of Ultron or Ant-Man, which both come out this year. However, this week’s rumors/spoilers have to do with movies that don’t come out until 2018 and 2019.  Continue reading

#1002 – 2015 Nerdy Resolutions

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on January 6, 2015 by scotthiga

It’s the New Year and time for everyone to start making their resolutions. There are obviously the common ones of losing weight, eating better and spending less money. I’m all for those resolutions and getting healthier both physically and financially. For us nerds, though, 2015 represents a brand new year to make the most of our favorite nerdclinations. 2015 will give us a new Avengers movie, new Marvel series on Netflix and, most importantly, a new Star Wars movie.

As we get started with 2015 here are some of my nerdy resolutions.
