#848 – Celebration

Celebration is important.

The Ewoks understood that in Return of the Jedi.

The Gungans understood that in The Phantom Menace.

Kool and the Gang understood that in their song “Celebration.”

Even God understands that celebration is important.

We often view the Law as a set of stringent rules to which nobody can live up. While there are a lot of limiting rules, there are also a lot of celebrative rules. In the Law God was always telling his people to remember and celebrate. God understood the importance of celebration, which is why he mandated so many weeklong festivals and parties.

Last night I had the opportunity to celebrate some great news for one of my friends. The news was so good, in fact, that it needed a party. Sometimes a handshake and a slap on the back are enough. Some news, though, requires more.

So we gathered with some more friends.

We ate dinner and watched basketball.

We told stories and literally laughed out loud.

It was a great night because we weren’t only celebrating the good news but we were also celebrating God’s goodness. Celebration is an opportunity to reflect and remember God’s goodness. God called his people to celebrate so that they would remember all the good things that he had done for them. Our celebrations today should be no different; they should help us remember God’s goodness and faithfulness.

So the next time you’re at a birthday party, retirement party or graduation party, take some time out to remember what God has done. God is always working in our lives, a reality that is definitely worth celebrating.

How do you like to celebrate?
