#724 – The Defenders

The Defenders

Disney is definitely making the most of its investment in Marvel. Not content just to release blockbuster after blockbuster and produce a hit television show, Disney is now attempting to dominate Netflix as well.

Last week Disney announced that it would produce four exclusive series for Netflix. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist will each get their own series, which will all culminate in a miniseries: The Defenders.

I’m a bad nerd and had to turn to Wikipedia to learn about the Defenders. In the comics Doctor Strange formed the Defenders to battle aliens and supernatural villains. The team’s lineup has changed over the years with heroes like the Hulk, Namor and the Silver Surfer, among many others.

Of the lineup Disney selected, Iron Fist is the only hero who was a member of the Defenders in the comics. But the heroes Disney selected all have a history in Hell’s Kitchen, a neighborhood near Manhattan. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist have all been associated with Hell’s Kitchen, both as residents and protectors.

It will be interesting to see what Marvel and Disney have planned for the Defenders. It feels like the stories will be smaller in scope, saving a neighborhood from destruction as opposed to the entire world. It will also be interesting to see what they do with Jessica Jones. Jones has been both a hero and a retired, stay-at-home mom, not to mention Luke Cage’s wife. I can’t wait to see if part of Jessica Jones’s and Luke Cage’s stories include them falling in love.

Disney is already moving forward with production, having hired showrunners for both the Daredevil and Jessica Jones series. If there weren’t enough reasons to look forward to 2015 (The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Batman vs. Superman, Episode 7), we can now add these series to the list.

Some people are worried about Marvel fatigue. With so many movies and a television show, perhaps we’re reaching our limit. I’m not concerned about that, though. We’re in a golden age of nerdy content and, whether it’s delivered on the silver screen or streaming over Netflix, I couldn’t be happier.

What are your thoughts about Disney and Marvel’s latest announcement?
