The beginning of Daylight Saving Time is one of my favorite days of the year. While I don’t enjoy losing an hour of sleep (especially before preaching in main service) I do love that it stays light later. I don’t like the fall and winter; I get moodier as day turns to night earlier and earlier. But now that we’re back on Daylight Saving Time, it almost feels like summer is here.
I love the light. Here are some of my favorite nerdy lights.
I want a lightsaber so bad. Every time I see a lightsaber in Star Wars I want to act like Veruca Salt, stomping my feet and yelling at my father until he gives me one. The lightsaber is the perfect combination of two things boys want more than anything: swords and lasers. I don’t want to be one of those guys who buys swords off the Home Shopping Channel from those two dudes with the mullets, but if someone gave me a sword I wouldn’t say no. Also, I’ve never turned down an opportunity to use a laser pointer. A lightsaber we be the perfect combination of those two irresistible desires and would bring my life, and anybody else’s, joy that could only be surpassed by Jesus himself. That joy would be diminished the instant I chopped my leg off but only slightly.
I was definitely late to the Harry Potter scene, having only just finished reading the books this year. One of my favorite spells is lumos, the wizard equivalent of shining your cell phone in the dark. I don’t believe in magic but I imagine it has to make the world a much easier place. I hate trying to find something in the dark with only the glow of my iPhone screen. Lumos would make life so much easier, when you lose your keys or are trying to plug something into the back of the TV. Magic would also make daily chores like cooking, washing the dishes and traveling much easier, but I think the greatest benefit would be lumos. I don’t think having the lumos spell would make up for also having to deal with Voldemort, but it would be a lot more convenient than carrying around a flashlight.
The Divine Light
The Fifth Element is one of my favorite movies; I saw it in the theater at least five times. Leeloo Dallas (Multipass) is the Fifth Element, the Divine Light that can defeat the Great Evil. Leeloo is one of the best parts about The Fifth Element: she’s funny, heartwarming, learns kung fu and saves the earth. Jesus calls us to be the light of the world, shining his glory through all that we do. I don’t think Leeloo was shining her light for Jesus but she definitely wasn’t hiding it under a bushel. In the movie Leeloo used her light to save the world. In real life we get to shine Jesus’ light and bring his saving grace to the world.
Daylight Saving Time affords us the opportunity for more light in our lives. Jesus, of course, is the ultimate light and he pierces the darkness both in the world and in our hearts. I’d rather have that light than a lightsaber any day but both would be awesome.
