#259 – Star Wars Porn

One of my major reasons for starting this blog was because nerd culture has recently been going mainstream. Nerdclinations are no longer the domain of socially awkward teenagers huddled in the basement with their 20-sided dice. The popularity of franchises like Harry Potter, Call of Duty and The Avengers have made nerds out of almost everybody

Unfortunately nerd culture isn’t the only subculture that has become more mainstream. With the advent of the Internet and the ease of its proliferation, pornography has also gone mainstream.

And these two worlds have collided with the release of Star Wars XXX: A Porn Parody.

Now, obviously, I am in no way endorsing this movie or suggesting that you watch. In fact I don’t think you should watch it or even think about watching it.

I really do think, though, that the proliferation and elevation of pornography in our society is both stunning and alarming. When I was younger I always knew that there was a section of the video store behind a curtain in which I wasn’t allowed.

That curtain was important. It kept pornography away from the rest of the world. It was relegated to its own dark section where it stayed in the shadows. The curtain also suggested some amount of shame because what happened in there wasn’t meant to be seen by everyone else.

But now the curtain is gone and shame went along with it.

The Internet removed the need for the curtain and it brought dark things to light. The separation that once existed between the real world and the world of pornography is gone. Men and women celebrate and elevate porn stars, talking about their favorites like they would talk about a band. And, because of pornography’s elevation and proliferation, Star Wars, our modern mythology about good versus evil, has been turned into something that is just evil.

Pornography is evil because it’s opposed to God. It distorts his view and intention for sexuality and turns it into something meant only to meet the basest of human desires. Instead of trusting in God and his desires, pornography pushes people to simply satisfy their desires and appetites.

And, what really gets my nerd rage going, is that they did it to Star Wars.

That really shouldn’t be surprising, though. The world is full of depraved people looking to spread depravity. As God’s people, though, depraved and saved as we are, we should be looking to spread God’s kingdom.

And we can do that by pointing out the darkness, but we’ll be much more effective if we’re focused on bringing the light.

  1. This reminds me of how The Big Bang Theory has incorporated more strong sexual themes into their writing. Before, the relationship between Leonard and Penny was rather innocent, and then they have them having sex and after. It seems that nothing can be left clean.
